What About Your Self-Esteem?
by Dan Beaty
Modern man is making a great deal today of this matter of self-esteem. It is reasoned today that our opinions of ourselves can either limit or increase both our usefulness to society and the level of our own personal peace and contentment.
Of course this is true for the man or women that does not know the Lord. But what of the born-again, believing child of God? Does our self-worth and our self-consciousness really have anything to do with God's desires for us? Is He limited by my low self-esteem? What about high self-esteem? Is this healthy? Is it similar or the same as pride -- the kind of pride that caused man's fall from the beginning?
It is my belief that our focus should always be on the Lord Jesus Christ. Then my trust in His unfailing Love allows the working of His Life within me. You are loved! I am loved! God so loved the world! This is true regardless of how I see myself. Whether I am a failure or a so-called success, whether I feel good about myself, or not -- God still loves me!
Out of devotion to Him I live a holy life. My joy is in pleasing Him! If I fail Him, He is yet faithful. He will forgive me, heal me and restore me to a right relationship with Him. The most important thing is that I abide in Him.
There is a time for self-examination, but only in regards to my standing in Him. If my heart is right towards Him, and I live in obedience to His Word, He will perform that good work within me! But dwelling on my successes and failures, my weaknesses and virtues, my high or low view of myself -- is just another form of idolatry!
Our God is a jealous God! Have no other gods before Him, including yourself!
Can you see the principle here? Think about what you want, don't want, can do, can't do, can't get or already have -- what's the difference? The result will always be death!
But -- Think about the Lord Jesus Christ! Who He is! What He has done and is doing.... What He will do... Think about His power, His love, His nature, His desire, His grace, His perfection... bask in the radiance of His glory! What life, what joy, what freedom!
Think about the life that He wants to live through you!
Is the cross and resurrection simply a historic event, or is it an eternal principle that releases us from our limitations, our circumstances, our guilt, our failures and our successes as well?
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
For he that is dead is freed from sin.
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall
also live with him:
Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
How many of you are like myself, so busy in the work of frustrating the grace of God? Not many today are too worried about circumcision and the keeping of the old covenant, but we do tend to look at our own performance and the performance of others. How much of our time is actually spent looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and trusting in His work at Calvary on our behalf -- and in us personally?
We believe... Yes we believe in the historical facts -- that Jesus Christ was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and rose from the grave on the third day! But do we believe in what He has and is accomplishing in us today?
Are we looking unto Jesus, or are we looking at ourselves? Are we beholding Him when we look into the mirror, or are we more conscious of our own habits, desires and weaknesses?
Everywhere you look today, on television, radio, newspapers and magazines -- you will find self help! In this land of America the most popular theme of all is self! I! - me - Mine! Even in Christian circles we hear many teachings on how we can get what we want from God!
"Do you feel the death? Do you hear the death? Does it sometimes overwhelm you? Then come away my beloved and learn of me -- says the Lord! I will show you things that will startle you! I will reveal my mysteries unto you! I will fill you with the revelation of Me! You can rise above the graveyard of self and live in Me!
In me you will know and experience and entirely different world! You can walk above the vanity, the gloom and despair! You can see My purpose and become a part of it! You can be free from the chains of self!
Hear the Voice of Your God and Live! Arise with me and soar into the heavenlies! Begin learning to rule and reign with me today! Let go of your pride, your fear, your insecurity, your self-preservation! Become dead to the world and alive in Me!
Know deep within your heart that I the Lord have a purpose for you in this life. That purpose can only be fulfilled as you cast down the idol of self, to serve no other God but Me!"
Father in heaven,
We surrender ourselves anew at the foot of the Cross. We acknowledge our need, our weakness, and even our failure to fully respond to your love. Cover us with your mercy and inspire us by your grace to a greater level of trust in your finished work on Calvary. Save us and sanctify us in spirit, soul and body, preparing us for your holy service.
Cause us to live in a fresh and living revelation of your Son, as we are daily transformed into His glorious image.
In Jesus precious Name,
