Understanding the Will of God
Living Truth Radio Broadcast, March 13, 1998
In last weeks broadcast we looked at the power of the Cross of Christ to deliver us from sin, that we might bring forth fruit unto God. Then we discussed how living in the purpose of God for our lives can help us to maintain our victory in Him.
Now the obvious question would be, "How can I find the will of God, that I might pursue it?"
There is no easy answer to this question. Many of us have spent our lives searching, seeking, praying, studying God's word, trying to understand certain dreams and visions that have come to us, or prophesies that were intended to give us some direction. We have listened to countless teachings such as this one, each time hoping to find the missing piece of the puzzle.
Then to add to the confusion, we discover that some of these sources begin to conflict with one another! Oh Lord teach us to hear your still, small voice, that can clear away the mental and emotional fog we often find ourselves in!
One simple thought that has encouraged my walk in the Lord is this: Who desires for us to know His will more than God Himself? And even during the times of uncertainty, we can be confident that any information He may withold from us is for our good, and for our learning, to the end that we might better know and fulfill His will.
There is a need for our greater confidence and trust in Him, and He is also ready and willing to build that trust within us day by day. He desires a relationship with us. And out of that relationship, His love, mercy, and the knowledge of His counsels begin to flow.
Listen to these inspiring words of Paul to the Ephesians:
Eph 1:15-23: Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith
in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to
give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;
That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
Brothers and sisters, God wants to enlighten you with the wisdom and revelation of the knowledge of Jesus Christ! He wants to fill you with a supernatural vision of the glorious Person of Christ! This is God's will for you!
And as you enter into the glorious depths of His Presence, many of your questions will become answered, and the order of your life will begin to fall into place!
You and I need to begin to SEE Christ -- and His glorious Church, His Body, His lovely Bride! I am telling you right now that this vision will truly change your life!
Where do you fit into God's plan and purpose? Right here, as part of Him, as a member of His annointed body! Here is where both the heavenly and practical aspects of His divine truth come together!
There is so much the Scriptures have to say along these lines, but on this program we only have the time to share one, small, but very important principle concerning the will of God.
Rom 12:1-2: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies
of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy,
acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Here we see that God's will begins to work in us as we first surrender ourselves unto Him in service, allowing His Word to transform our thinking. Then as our thoughts are cleansed from the thinking of this world, our lives begin to prove that good, acceptable and perfect will of God!
The will of God must be worked into our hearts and minds! Often we think in terms of whether or not it is God's will for me to take this job, or move into this house, or buy this car. But those are only periferal issues. The heart of the matter is where my mind is fixed, and what kind of attitudes I possess!
A heart and mind that is focussed on the delight of our Lovely Lord, and possessed by His Living Word and Holy Spirit -- IS THE WILL OF GOD!
1 Th 5:16-18:
Pray without ceasing.
In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Now, back to Romans 12, starting at vers 3:
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man
that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he
ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt
to every man the measure of faith.
For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that showeth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Here is where the practicality of God's plan comes into focus. We can see from this that there are no lone rangers in God's Kingdom. We are members one of another. And as a part of his Body, this community of believers, we find our place and purpose!
In our coming together as His family, we discover things about ourselves and one another that were before unrealized. We actually ignite one another's spiritual gifts!
In the gathering of God's people, everyone has a certain responsibility. The first is to present ourselves as living sacrifices unto Him -- everyone -- not just the preachers and teachers and song leaders!
As we come together we submit to one another in the fear of the Lord, and begin to witness His Living Presence in the Midst! When as few as two our three gather together in His Name -- Jesus Himself appears!
Well, what do you mean, brother Dan? What I mean is that when EVERYONE yeilds to His Lordship, and gives the portion that was given him or her as individuals to share, the Body of Christ becomes a living expression of the wisdom, the grace, the love, the power, the ressurection LIFE of Christ Himself!
Reading again in Romans 12:9-10: Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;
Please consider this: the many "one another's" in the Bible! This walk in Christ, your salvation, your growth unto full stature in Him, and your proving the good, acceptable and perfect will of God -- is a family afair!
Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;
Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.
Let us read on here concerning the will of God for us:
Bless them which persecute you: bless, and curse not.
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Let me make this as clear as possible: You and I will never realize our full potential in Christ apart from the community life of the believers. We need one another desperately! We need the comfort and encouragement of the brethren as well as the challenge and correction that our being together brings!
And being together is one great way in which we discover our individual gifts, callings, and the overall purpose of God His Church. It is the will of God for you to be connected to other believers! And your obedience to His will in this respect will lead you to even more understanding of His will for your life.
No one individual can overcome the gates of hell! Jesus is building His Church -- and the gates of hell WILL NOT prevail against it! This is HIS BODY -- the fullness of Him that filleth all in all!
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: (1 Pet 2:9-10)
This is a day and and hour when the Lord is restoring to us our peoplehood! As Ezekiel prophesied to the dry bones that were scattered all over the valley, God is speaking to you and I today -- Hear the Word of the Lord!
I will shake you! I will connect you together, bone to his bone! I will put flesh and sinew upon you, and speak to the winds, oh breath, breathe upon these slain THAT THEY MAY LIVE!
Praise the Lord! What a glorious day this is to be living in! It is a day for us to abandon our worship of individualism, and crown Jesus as Lord of all! He is the Head, and we are the members of His body. This is the Christ!
Not a religion. Not an organization. But a living, spiritual organism, that will one day stand up and demonstrate to the world Who Jesus really is!
We thank you that you have a purpose for each and every one of our lives. We also thank you that you are revealing that purpose to us today. Give us grace to receive your wonderful family and to find our place in it. Help us to find the strength and unity together in You, that will release us from the trends of this age, to become living examples of your glorious day to our generation.
In Jesus Name,
