“When I Run, I feel His Pleasure”

“Chariots of Fire” is a 1981 movie that is based on the true stories of 2 men running in the 1924 Olympics. A key line of the film is spoken by Eric Liddell, a Scottish Christian whose hearts desire was to continue his parent’s missionary work in China. When his sister questioned his participation in the Olympics before going to China, this was his reply:

“I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure.”

Sometimes I wonder how many believers sense that God made them for a purpose, and that their peculiar abilities were given by Him. God made Eric Liddell fast. When Eric ran he not only felt his pleasure in it but he also felt the pleasure of the Lord!

Maybe you know a great Christian leader, teacher, worship leader or evangelist that inspires you. You want to be like this person, but can’t seem to get going in that direction. Listen, God also made YOU for a purpose! Your purpose! He made Eric Liddell fast. How did He make you? Did you ever stop to think that even your natural abilities can be a means of glorifying God and giving Him pleasure?

Do you feel His pleasure when you exercise your ability to provide for your family, to keep up your home, to care for your family? Do you feel His pleasure when you serve your community or your church? Do you feel His pleasure when you apply your trade with diligence and when striving for excellence in your endeavors?

For as long as I can remember, I desired to play a musical instrument. At 13 years of age, I did not know that the joy I experienced when playing guitar and drums was His pleasure. Today I know that my emotional state can usually be improved when I pick up a musical instrument and simply let Him play through me!

Later I realized that I liked to put my thoughts down on paper. About 40 years ago I wrote down some things that God had put on my heart. As time went on, I wrote down more thoughts from Him on the Scriptures. As life became more complicated and busy, I neglected my writing, and didn’t think anyone was interested anyway. Eventually I realized that I needed for myself to get back into the flow of writing for Him.

There is nothing like the pleasure I feel when I run in the path that He has chosen for me! It is His pleasure that I feel and there is nothing else like it in the world!

Because He Lives!

During this week, Christians around the world remember the execution of Jesus Christ to which He willingly subjected Himself on our behalf. This coming Sunday we will celebrate His glorious resurrection from death which confirmed His Lordship over all things.

To outsiders this event might be a myth or without significance. But to those who truly know Him, it imparts meaning and significance to our existence in a way that nothing else can. The Gospel writer and apostle John wrote that the world could not hold all the books that should be written about Jesus and His life. Most of us would agree that He is bigger than words, or books, but just the same we cannot help but try to describe Him and what He has done for us.

Paul prayed for the believers in his day that they eyes of their hearts would be enlightened, so that they would know the hope of His calling, the riches of His glory and the power toward those of us who believe which was demonstrated in Christ’s resurrection from the dead, and His exaltation to the right hand of the throne of God. (Ephesians 1:18-23)

Oh how do we need to be reminded of this fact, and that the very same power that raised Christ from the dead dwells in all of those who believe in Him and are “born from above.” (Romans 8:9-11) The reality of that historical event must be believed, embraced, and experienced. The miracle of His resurrection becomes a personal miracle for everyone who does believe, embrace, and experience His life for themselves.

This season is a good time to encourage ourselves to partake of the full inheritance we already have in Jesus. If we sense that our experience does not always agree with what others have described in the Scriptures, we need only to be honest before Him. His help is readily available, for He desires to share His victory with us! All over the world, this Sunday those who love and serve Jesus Christ will gather together to praise, honor and celebrate Him and His victory over death, hell and the grave. What a great opportunity to rejoice with others and receive all that He has provided for us, sharing His love and victory with others!
